Howling Giant, Gwar, Green Jellÿ, and Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland
Plus Gary's Appendix and the Forgetmenauts Play Musical D&D
In his November Grumpy Wizard Newsletter, Travis Miller recommended the heavy metal band Howling Giant. He mentioned the group’s D&D fandom and his positive experience meeting them at a recent show. I had a fun conversation with Travis on an episode of The Appendix LP Podcast, and I respect his metal opinions. So I had to check out Howling Giant’s most recent album Glass Future right away. It’s excellent and features a very cool album cover as well:
I think the band’s self-description is accurate:
“HOWLING GIANT entice classic metal and hard rock to interact dynamically with spacy, prog-infused passages, desert and psychedelic metal moments, rock organs, catchy hooks, and top everything off with soaring harmonized vocals.”
You can preview tracks and buy the album from the Howling Giant Bandcamp page:
And you can subscribe to The Grumpy Wizard Newsletter and read Travis’s blog at grumpywizard.home.blog. Travis also wrote an article on creating sword and sorcery adventures for Gary’s Appendix: Issue 4, which is published by Jeff Jones of the RPG Ramblings podcast. The issue is crowdfunding now, and I was happy to pledge my support.
Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland
On a recent episode of The Vintage RPG Podcast, hosts Stu Horvath and John “Hambone” McGuire compare the RPG Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland by Brian Shutter to the bands Gwar and Green Jellÿ (originally Green Jellö). Sounds gööd to me! Here’s a description of the game from the Goodman Games website:
“Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland is a tabletop RPG for 1-7 players that is ultra-violent and style-focused. It is a no-holds-barred, to-the-max game that is half medieval fantasy and half sci-fi. The game oozes 80s and 90s nostalgia, featuring items like ninja stars and fanny packs, as well as many references to the era.”
I found this Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland Rpg playlist created by Brian Shutter that includes Gwar as well as favorites of mine like Mastadon, Misfits, Warlock, Green Lung, and Megadeth.

The Forgetmenauts Play Musical D&D
The fantasy folk punk band The Forgetmenauts recorded a concert earlier this year in which they tied “some favorite Forgetmenauts songs into a narrative, with the songs and story direction decided by rolls of the dice.” You can watch this game of “Musical D&D” here:
I recently picked up a copy of NLOTTW:TCE and it is THE post apocalyptic game I’ve always wished existed :)
