A recent Rediscovered Realms newsletter contained an informative retrospective on Warlock: The Fighting Fantasy Magazine:
The article included pictures of each of the 13 Warlock issues that were published. I recognized the artwork on the cover of the horror issue (#13) as being the same as the album cover for Abominog by Uriah Heep, which was released in 1982. The artist is Les Edwards and the piece was previously used for fiction book covers. You can learn more about the artwork at the Les Edwards website.
Choosing Gaming Music
The My Terrible Sorcery Is Without Equal In The West blog published an article on “Choosing Gaming Music.” It provides rules for creating playlists for use during your gaming sessions. Check it out if you like to augment your game sessions with some mood music.
Note, the blog post takes issue with the jazz fusion recommendations listed in this older “Incomplete List of Underrepresented Musical Genres in the RPG/OSR Community” article from the Monsters and Manuals blog. Personally, I think the Al Di Meola and Return to Forever songs suggested are both tremendous songs from monster records, suitable for any occasion.
RPG Ramblings Podcast Appearance
I had the honor and privilege of being the guest on a recent episode of the RPG Ramblings podcast. Many thanks to host Jeff Jones for the invitation and the fun conversation about music, TTRPGs, and more. Here is Jeff’s description of the episode:
Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a quasi–weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today, Matt Thompson of Critical Hit Parader joins me. Matt has found a creative niche lying at the intersection of RPGs and his love for music. We all know that those two great tastes taste great together, but it took a catalyst to make that happen. Matt is that catalyst. Warning alert, this is a very ramble-y episode full of music discussion and sporadic doses of RPG musings.
The stadium is filled and our guitars are tuned. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling.
You can listen to the episode on Spotify or wherever finer podcasts can be found. Or you can watch it on YouTube below:
Congrats on getting interviewed on RPG Ramblings podcast, Matt! And thanks for the Warlock magazine mention. That's cool trivia about Les Edwards and Uriah Heep!
